The peak of Mount Longido stands at approximately 2,637 meters (8,652 feet) above sea level.
Situated in the Longido District of the Arusha Region, the mountain is located near the Tanzanian-Kenyan border, about a 1.5- to 2-hour drive north of the city of Arusha.
The hike to the summit traverses several distinct vegetation zones. You'll begin in dry savannah and acacia woodlands before ascending into a montane forest. The terrain is often steep, rocky, and can be overgrown, making it a challenging but rewarding climb.
Mount Longido is a sacred mountain for the local Maasai people. Hiking with a Maasai warrior as your guide is a key part of the experience. They not only ensure your safety but also provide invaluable insight into their culture, traditions, and the local flora and fauna.
The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes. While sightings are not guaranteed, the possibility of encountering buffalo or leopards on the trail is why an armed ranger is required. From the summit, on a clear day, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views that include the vast Maasai plains, Mount Meru, and even the distant peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Pick up from your hotel in Arusha and drive to Longido town. After meeting your guides and ranger, you'll begin the ascent. The hike on the first day is often shorter, allowing you to reach a designated campsite on the mountain well before sunset. Set up camp. Enjoy a delicious dinner and the peaceful evening under the starry African sky. This is an excellent time to hear stories from your Maasai guides about their culture and the history of the mountain.
Wake up early to enjoy a beautiful sunrise over the plains. After a light breakfast, you will make the final push to the summit. Reach the summit, take photos, and enjoy the panoramic views. Begin your full descent, which can take several hours. Arrive back at the base of the mountain and be driven back to your hotel in Arusha.
Transfers can be arranged between the airport, Arusha city and between hotels, restaurants and attractions, either on a seat-in-coach basis, or the private hire of an entire vehicle. All pick-up times are arranged to tie in with flight departures and scheduled tours. Our guides work to this timetable, collecting guests from each hotel en route to their intended destination.
