Mount Longido

Adventure Above the Savannah

OVERVIEW

Mount Longido is a hidden gem for trekkers in northern Tanzania. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, Longido offers a unique and authentic off-the-beaten-path experience. It's a fantastic option for a shorter trek, a way to acclimatize before a larger climb, or an immersive cultural experience with the Maasai people who call this area home.

FEATURES

A

Elevation

The peak of Mount Longido stands at approximately 2,637 meters (8,652 feet) above sea level.

B

Location

Situated in the Longido District of the Arusha Region, the mountain is located near the Tanzanian-Kenyan border, about a 1.5- to 2-hour drive north of the city of Arusha.

C

Landscape and Ecosystems

The hike to the summit traverses several distinct vegetation zones. You'll begin in dry savannah and acacia woodlands before ascending into a montane forest. The terrain is often steep, rocky, and can be overgrown, making it a challenging but rewarding climb.

D

Cultural Significance

Mount Longido is a sacred mountain for the local Maasai people. Hiking with a Maasai warrior as your guide is a key part of the experience. They not only ensure your safety but also provide invaluable insight into their culture, traditions, and the local flora and fauna.

E

Wildlife and Views

The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes. While sightings are not guaranteed, the possibility of encountering buffalo or leopards on the trail is why an armed ranger is required. From the summit, on a clear day, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views that include the vast Maasai plains, Mount Meru, and even the distant peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.
